Each growing reptile molts.
Also water turtles skins itself. Thus, if a small turtle, swimming in the aquarium, has hanging skin frazzles, it is usually a completely natural phenomenon.
I get many inquiries therefore, “whether my animal is ill…?"
With the tank it looks somewhat differently:
At the tank no skin frazzles separate, but shell plates of horn. In order that the animal can push off these plates regularly a suitable sun place with the correct lighting is necessary. The sun place should be absolutely dry, so that the animal will be completely dry within a short time. You can find further information in the topic lighting.
Also this repulsion is a completely natural procedure and there is no reason to worry. Underneath will show up the beautifully colored and characteristic design of the animal.
Unless a white-yellowish, cheesy compound appears under the detached plate. Then it might be a kind of necrosis and therefore a turtle-experienced veterinary surgeon should be consulted.
Swimming islands made of cork which fully sucks itself with water after some time are not suitable any longer and must be dried completely before using again. By the way a too strongly curved cork tube can be pressed with a weight quite well to a flatter form during the drying process.
