Nutrition of water turtles

back to overview

First of all: Fodder sticks are not suitable as exclusive fodder! Nothing speaks against an OCCASIONAL feeding by sticks, however not more often then once a week..

Not all water turtles can be nourished equally and in the same kind. It always depends on the breed. Comparatively Diamond Turtles ( Malaclemys terrapin ) eat much more than for example Decoration- ( Trachemys ) and Ornamental Turtles ( Chrysemys ). An Indian Roof Turtle ( Kachuga tecta tecta ) nourishes itself predominantly vegetable, although it is as well a water turtle! To these breed specific characteristics has urgently to be paid attention.

Turtles should be nourished as balanced as possible. With a balanced nutrition should be paid attention to the variety of the offered fodder. Not all water turtles eat always animal food. E.g. Decoration Turtles ( Trachemys ) nourish themselves with increasing age augmented to exclusively vegetable.

Carnivor means carnivore

Herbivor means herbivore

Omnivor means "as well as"
